Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet your professional driver-guide for a warm welcome and safari briefing. Begin a scenic drive north through Rwanda’s rolling hills and rural countryside. The journey highlights why the country earns the name “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

Arrive in Musanze near Volcanoes National Park, set against the misty Virunga volcanoes. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your lodge or enjoying views of the volcanic peaks. An optional visit to local communities or the Dian Fossey exhibition can be arranged.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake early for breakfast and transfer to park headquarters for registration and briefing by Rwanda Development Board rangers. After group allocation, begin your guided gorilla trek into the bamboo and montane forest.

The trek duration varies depending on gorilla movements, but the reward remains unforgettable. Spend one magical hour observing a habituated mountain gorilla family in its natural environment. Watch silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles interact at close range.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and rest. The afternoon remains relaxed, allowing recovery after the forest hike. Optional cultural activities in nearby villages can be arranged.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest

After breakfast, depart Volcanoes National Park and drive south toward Rwanda’s largest protected rainforest. The route crosses scenic countryside, tea plantations, and winding mountain roads.

Arrive at Nyungwe Forest National Park in the afternoon. This ancient rainforest hosts rich biodiversity, including chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and hundreds of bird species. Enjoy forest views from your lodge and prepare for the next day’s primate experience.

If time allows, take a short nature walk or simply relax while listening to forest sounds.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe – Departure

Begin the day with an early breakfast before transferring to the ranger station for a chimpanzee trekking briefing. Enter the forest with expert trackers in search of chimpanzee communities moving through the canopy.

Chimpanzee trekking offers a fast-paced and energetic contrast to gorilla encounters. Observe social interactions, vocal communication, and agile movement through the treetops.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch. Later, transfer to Kigali or proceed to the airport for your onward flight. An optional canopy walkway experience can be added if time permits.
