When to go Bird Watching in Rwanda?
Contrary to the Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Wildlife Safaris in Akagera National Park, bird watching in Rwanda is best done during the wet seasons although the dry seasons also offer great opportunities.The best bird-watching destination in Rwanda is Nyungwe Forest, known for hosting resident birds all year round and the best time to visit is from January to June, when most birds are vocal. However, April can be challenging due to heavy rainfall. The Dry season from June to September is easier for hiking, chimpanzee trekking, wildlife safaris, golden monkey tracking, and gorilla trekking.

Birding in Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe National Park is a rich tropical montane rainforest supporting an impressive diversity of wildlife, including, 13 species of primates, variety of plant life, and 322 bird species. Of these birds, 29 species are found nowhere else within Rwanda. One of the park’s most celebrated highlights is the striking Red-collared Babbler, a species that can be reliably seen only in Rwanda. Other notable birds include the Rwenzori Turaco, Rwenzori Nightjar, Handsome Francolin, Grauer’s Warbler, and several species of sunbirds. Thanks to knowledgeable birding guides and a well-established trail system, visitors have excellent chances of observing these species and many others.
You might also encounter Kungwe Apalis, Kivu Ground Thrush, and Willard’s Sooty Boubou. Among the park’s rarest and most elusive residents are the Congo Bay Owl, Albertine Owlet, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, and Rockefeller’s Sunbird—species that have been recorded but are rarely sighted. Upcoming night walks in Nyungwe will provide new opportunities to discover the forest’s secretive nocturnal birds.
Birding in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park lies among a chain of dormant, forested volcanoes and is home to Mount Karisimbi, the highest peak in Rwanda. Although the park is best known for its Mountain Gorillas, it also offers rewarding experiences for bird enthusiasts, with around 200 recorded bird species, including 17 Albertine Rift endemics.
Many of the bird species found here are similar to those seen in Nyungwe National Park; however, the striking Scarlet-tufted Sunbird stands out as a special highlight unique to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Birders hoping to see this beautiful species have their best chance while hiking to the summit of Mount Bisoke. Enhancing the area’s birding appeal, nearby lakes provide opportunities for short and rewarding birdwatching excursions. In addition, the nearby Buhanga Eco-Park is known as a promising location to spot the African Pitta during its annual migratory period.
Birdwatching in Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park is a scenic savannah reserve characterized by rolling landscapes, lakes, wetlands, and woodland habitats. While it is well known for offering a classic African Big Five safari experience/Rwanda Wildlife Safaris, the park’s rich variety of ecosystems also makes it one of Rwanda’s premier birdwatching destinations. To date, approximately 490 bird species have been recorded in Akagera. Although the park provides an experience similar to other regional reserves, its relatively compact size allows easy access to multiple habitats, making it an excellent location for building an extensive Rwanda birding checklist.
One of the most sought-after species for birders is the Red-faced Barbet, which has a limited regional distribution and is a major highlight in Rwanda. It is commonly seen around Akagera Game Lodge and the Muyumbu Campsite. Other notable birds include Carruthers’s Cisticola, Northern Brown-throated Weaver, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Swamp Warbler, White-collared Oliveback, and the elegant Grey-crowned Crane. Another highly prized sighting is the Shoebill, which is observed fairly regularly within the park. In addition, Akagera supports healthy populations of raptors and hosts large numbers of waterbirds.
For an exceptional birding experience, visitors can take a boat trip on Lake Ihema, which offers excellent views of Rwanda’s diverse waterbird species. Sightings of the African Finfoot are especially likely, with frequent observations from the Ruzizi Tented Lodge. After dark, nighttime birding outings reveal a variety of nocturnal species, including Verreaux’s Eagle Owl and several species of nightjars.
