Kilimanjaro National Park
Kilimanjaro National Park is one of Tanzania’s most iconic protected areas, located in the Kilimanjaro Region about 300 kilometers south of the equator, near the town of Moshi. The park protects Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, and includes all areas above the tree line as well as the surrounding montane forest belt above 1,820 meters in elevation. Covering approximately 1,688 square kilometers, the park is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and plays a vital role in conservation, tourism, and watershed protection in northern Tanzania.
The National Park was officially established in 1973, when Mount Kilimanjaro above the tree line was gazetted as a national park. Its global importance was later recognized in 1987 when UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site due to its outstanding natural value. In 2013, Kilimanjaro National Park was also named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, further highlighting its significance. In 2005, the park boundaries were expanded to include the entire montane forest zone, which had previously been protected under the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve.
The headquarters of Kilimanjaro National Park are located at Marangu, about 44 kilometers from Moshi town and roughly 86 kilometers from Kilimanjaro International Airport, making the park relatively accessible for visitors. The area has a long conservation history dating back to the early twentieth century, when the German colonial administration declared Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding forests a game reserve. In 1921, it was reclassified as a forest reserve, laying the foundation for modern conservation efforts.

Wildlife and Attractions in Kilimanjaro National Park
Kilimanjaro National Park supports a wide range of wildlife and natural attractions, shaped by the mountain’s dramatic changes in altitude and climate. As elevation increases, different ecological zones appear, each providing habitats for different animal species that call this place home. Above the timberline, wildlife becomes more specialized, with animals adapted to colder temperatures and sparse vegetation. African elephants are also commonly sighted in the montane forest, particularly between the Namwai and Tarakia rivers, and on occasion they move to higher elevations in search of food and water. These elephant movements play an important role in shaping forest structure and maintaining ecological balance.
Primates are another highlight of Kilimanjaro National Park. The montane forests are home to blue monkeys and eastern black-and-white colobus monkeys, which are often observed moving through the canopy. Nocturnal species such as bushbabies are also present, though they are more difficult to spot. Predators like leopards inhabit the forest as well, though sightings are rare due to their elusive nature.
