The gorilla trekking national parks in the country are under the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), a body that manages and conserves the natural habitat. Even more to this, the work of issuing the Uganda Gorilla trekking permits has been assigned to the body. The cost of the Gorilla Permits is $800 for foreign non-residents; however, the price is slightly lower for foreign residents, who pay $700 per head. Without the permits, no visitor can be allowed to trek for gorillas in their natural habitat.
Uganda’s Bwindi National Park is the prime gorilla tracking destination with more than 500 gorillas dwelling in the forest. Primate lovers have the opportunity to explore and witness 20 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi National Park, while Mgahinga Gorilla National Park houses 30 individuals, including one habituated family. Trekkers are assigned to move in groups of 8 members and are led by a team of ranger guides and trackers into the habitat of the mountain gorillas. Once the group has found the allocated gorilla-family, they are allowed to spend not less than one hour with the creatures and then return to the office.
Where to go Gorilla trekking in Uganda-Gorilla tracking destination
Unlike Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda is blessed with two Gorilla National Parks of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and altogether have more than 500 mountain gorillas.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Located in the southwest of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the best place to go gorilla tracking. The word “ Bwindi “ means “impenetrable” as translated from the local language of the people around the sanctuary and it means impenetrable. This park sits on an extensive land area of about 331 km2, forming a primate paradise never seen before. While adventuring in Bwindi Forest, hikers have a chance of seeing 20 habituated gorilla families living in the lush green world.
Moreover, this is the only place in the world where you can also do the gorilla habituation experience, that involving introducing a family of apes to humans. During the Gorilla Habituation, hikers are allowed to spend more time about 4 hours with wild primates. These experiences take place in the 4 sectors of Bwindi of Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo sector.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Situated in the southwest of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the second home of silverback gorillas in the Pearl of Africa. This park is an extension of the Virunga Massif area between Uganda, Rwanda and the D.R Congo. Mgahinga is a stunning wilderness holding a immense number of primates like monkeys and the great apes. Mgahinga Park is the place where silver meets gold (silverback gorillas and golden monkeys). This phenomenon makes it a must-visit area for those interested in seeing the animals on a single African Tour.
Unlike the large populations in Uganda’s Bwindi, Mgahinga Park is home to only one habituated group of gorillas. This family is called “Nyakagezi Group” consisting of about 19 members that are available for trekking to humans. The sanctuary issues only 8 gorilla permits per day to visitors who are led by the team of ranger guides. Upon meeting the allocated family in the jungle, visitors can spend one hour with the gorillas, watching them as they go about their day-to-life and take photos of the animals.
After they return to the receiving center for visitors under the lead of the guides and porters where they are rewarded with certificates. This applies to the golden monkey experience aimed at conserving the endangered primates from extinction. However, the two activities ( Golden monkey tracking & Gorilla trekking ) are not done simultaneously because of animal movements and payment are made differently.
The Best Time for the Uganda Gorilla Safari
The Uganda Gorilla Safari takes people into the highlands of the Virunga Massif filled with forests and thick bushes. For those organizing a primate tracking tour, the best time to go gorilla trekking is in the dry season in from June to September and December to January. This is due to less foliage on the leaves implying ease visibility.
