The Best Time to visit Kenya’s Masai Mara

Just like other iconic national park/national reserves in East Africa, the best time to visit Masai Mara is in the summer period between the months of June-September and December-February. This is due to the presence of shorter grass that makes animal spotting easier.

What to do during the Kenya Masai Mara safari-Activities & Attractions

Big Five viewing

Whereas Masai Mara National Reserve is adored for its Wildebeest migration, the area is also the birthplace of Kenya Big Five Safari. In side one of the largest homes of Big Fives the numbers of the creatures residing in the wilderness leaves forces many people to visit this destination. Regarding the populations of the Big Cats. More than 800 lions are residents of this iconic reserve. The elephants in this wilderness surpass those in Amboseli National Park and Lake Nakuru National Park.

The Great Wildebeest migration

One of the best things to do at the Maasi Mara is watching the marvel of the wildebeest migration. This is one of the 8 wonders of the African continent making it a must do activity in East Africa. It will not be fair to miss out on seeing the second largest mammal migration after the ice age. The most iconic moment is the Mara River crossing where the wildebeests must cheat death in the crocodile filled waters. Watchers of wildlife can observe close to one million wildebeests and zebras.

Birding Trips

Despite the area being admired for the wildebeest migration and Big Fives, Maasai Mara is a great bird sanctuary known for migratory and endemic species. To enrich the bird viewing experiences, the Mara Reserve offers more than 500 species of birds common during the game drives, nature walks and hot air balloon safari. Observing the birds in this enormous home of wildlife is rewarding and mind freshening while listening to the twittering sounds in the forests and woodlands. On the amazing Kenya Birding tour, expect to witness the common ostrich, grebes, Egyptian goose among others.

Game drives

Just like other famous destinations like Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East, game drives are the best way to explore the enormous sanctuary. It would take many days to explore the hidden flora and fauna on foot thus the need for roads in the reserve. There is a dense network of roads connecting the access points to the remote ends where animals are sighted. Game drives bring people near their favorite Big Five animals in the national reserve.

Hot Air Balloon Safari

Masai Mara Reserve presents visitors with amazing activities that cannot be forgotten years after leaving East Africa. Out of the dozens of things to do, the hot air balloon safari is the best way to see the large populations of animals in the Mara. While floating in air, large herds of buffalos, elephants and zebras that could not be explored on the game drives are brought nearer.  Inaccessible areas of the sanctuary where no road network exists and forested areas can be seen.
