Best places to visit for Uganda Birding Safaris
Mabamba Swamps.
The Mabamba Wetland is located at Lake Victoria’s edge and is only an hour’s drive from the City Center. It is one of the best birding locations that are near the country’s capital. The wetland is popular for its impressive birdlife with over 200 different species recorded here. Among the top birds here are Shoebill Stork, Pied Kingfishers, Blue-breasted Bee-eaters, African and Lesser Jacanas, and African Pygmy Goose among others.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a true haven for birdwatchers, supporting an impressive total of 347 bird species. It is home to 24 of the 25 bird species endemics to the Albertine Rift, making it one of the most important locations for endemic birdlife in Uganda. In addition, Bwindi hosts 76 of Uganda’s 144 Guinea–Congo Forest biome bird species. The Park also qualifies as a key habitat for Afro-tropical highland birds, with 68 of the 86 species represented, while the Lake Victoria biome is represented by 4 of its 12 species.
Birdlife in Bwindi is abundant and relatively easy to observe, as many species gather in mixed feeding flocks that remain active throughout the day. Some of the best birding routes within the park include the Bamboo Zone, the Mubwindi Swamp Trail in Ruhija, and the Waterfall Trail in Buhoma.
Birdwatchers visiting Bwindi may encounter a wide variety of species, such as the Western Green Tinkerbird, African Wood Owl, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Red-throated Alethe, and the Fine-banded Woodpecker, among others.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The main bird species you may spot in Kibale Forest include Papyrus Canary, White-winged Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek, White-collared Oliveback, Crowned Eagle, and Yellow-billed Barbet.
Top Birds to Watch on a Birding Safari in Uganda
Uganda is one of Africa’s richest birding destinations, hosting a remarkable variety of rare and spectacular bird species that attract bird lovers from around the world. Among the most sought-after birds is the Shoebill, an unusual and rare species commonly seen in Murchison Falls National Park and around Mabamba wetland. This large bird is known for its distinctive whale-shaped bill and is mostly found in swampy and marshland areas. Adult Shoebills have bluish-grey plumage, while younger birds appear more brownish in color.
Another notable species is the Great Blue Turaco, a large and colorful forest bird. Although striking in appearance, it is a weak flier and usually glides over short distances. The Shelley’s Crimson-wing is a rarely sighted species, easily identified by its bright red bill. Males display vivid red coloring on the head and back, while females have olive-colored heads with a red mantle.
The Standard-winged Nightjar is a fascinating nocturnal bird that remains well hidden during the day due to its camouflaged brown plumage. At dusk, it emerges to fly, with males displaying extremely long wing feathers that can reach up to 38 centimeters. The Short-tailed Warbler, also known as Neumann’s Warbler, is a small bird with a large head, short tail, and distinctive facial markings.
Uganda’s tropical forests are home to rare species such as the endangered African Green Broadbill, recognized by its light green feathers and blue throat, and the elusive Green-breasted Pitta, which inhabits damp forest lowlands. Other forest specialties include the colorful Doherty’s Bushshrike, the long-tailed Bar-tailed Trogon, and the solitary Black-breasted Barbet.
While some bird species are endemic to specific habitats, Uganda offers numerous birding sites where enthusiasts can observe an impressive number of species. An experienced birder can identify over 100 species in a single day, especially when starting early in the morning, making Uganda a true paradise for birdwatching.
