Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the southwestern part of Uganda, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s top destinations for gorilla trekking. This National Park is renowned for its mist-covered hills that surround an incredibly dense, almost impenetrable forest, which is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including gorillas, birds, insects, and many other small mammals. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest provides protection for roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, including 20 habituated groups that visitors can track during guided gorilla tours. The word “Bwindi” translates to “darkness” in the local language, reflecting the forest’s dense and nearly impenetrable nature. Visitors on safari will quickly understand why the forest is considered impenetrable. Trekking through Bwindi requires a moderate level of physical fitness, especially for those who wish to take part in the adventurous and physically demanding mountain gorilla tracking experiences.

Besides mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the most biologically diverse national parks in Uganda. Apart from the impressive population of endangered mountain gorillas, the park is home to 346 bird species, over 200 species of butterflies, and around 324 species of trees, ten of which are found only in this area. There are up to 20 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, allowing visitors the chance to trek and observe them each day. To participate in gorilla tracking, visitors are required to obtain a gorilla permit, an official document granting access to the gorillas in Uganda, which currently costs about US$800 per person.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

One of the top safari activities at Bwindi is undoubtedly gorilla tracking, with 20 habituated mountain gorilla families residing in the park. Trekking to see these majestic animals involves hiking through dense forest, navigating challenging terrain, and making your way through thick vegetation in search of mountain gorillas. Along the trek, you will also have the opportunity to observe a variety of birds, butterflies, and other primates that inhabit the forest.

When you encounter a gorilla family, visitors are allowed to spend up to one hour observing the gorillas in their natural environment, gaining an unforgettable insight into their behaviors and social interactions. It is important to note that only individuals aged 15 years and above are eligible to participate in mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Bird Watching in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is also an exceptional destination for bird watching in Uganda. Birding enthusiasts will find the experience highly rewarding, as the park is home to over 350 bird species, including more than 20 species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift. Bwindi’s lush rainforest, diverse altitudes, and rich plant life provide perfect habitats for a wide variety of birds. Some of the most notable species that you may encounter include the African green broadbill, Shelley’s crimsonwing, handsome francolin, Rwenzori nightjar, and a multitude of colorful sunbirds.
