Kibale Forest National Park is one of Uganda’s most popular safari destinations, best known for its remarkable diversity of primates, particularly the endangered chimpanzees. Located in western Uganda, the park is dominated by lush tropical rainforest and is widely regarded as one of the top places in the country for chimpanzee tracking and primate trekking safaris. Kibale is home to more than 13 species of primates, including chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, olive baboons, and black-and-white colobus monkeys, among others. Chimpanzee tracking is the main attraction and draws visitors from around the world who come to experience this unforgettable wildlife encounter.
Kibale National Park is estimated to support around 1,500 chimpanzees, making it one of the largest populations in East Africa. Several chimpanzee communities have been habituated, allowing visitors to observe these intelligent and highly social animals at close range during guided trekking experiences. For travelers seeking a more in-depth experience, Kibale also offers a chimpanzee habituation program.
In addition to its primates, Kibale Forest National Park boasts exceptional biodiversity. The park supports a wide range of wildlife, bird species, insects, and plant life. With more than 370 bird species recorded, Kibale is considered one of Uganda’s premier birdwatching destinations. Other animals found in the park include forest elephants, bush pigs, duikers, and an impressive variety of colorful butterflies, all contributing to the park’s rich ecosystem.
Most safaris to Kibale Forest National Park also include a visit to the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed conservation area located just outside the park boundaries. Guided walks through the wetland provide excellent opportunities for bird watching, primate viewing, and cultural interaction with local communities, while at the same time supporting sustainable tourism and local livelihoods.
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park is the most sought-after primate activity in Uganda and ranks among the top wildlife experiences in East Africa. Often referred to as the “primate capital of the world”, Kibale Forest National Park hosts the largest chimpanzee population in the country, making it the leading destination for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. With more than 1,500 chimpanzees living within the forest, visitors benefit from an exceptionally high chance of encountering these fascinating primates in the wild.
Just like mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking involves guided walks through the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. The activity begins early in the morning with a briefing at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. During this session, experienced guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority provide important information on trekking rules, safety procedures, and chimpanzee behavior. After the briefing, trekkers head into the dense tropical rainforest, following established trails while listening for the distinctive pant-hoots and sounds that signal the presence of chimpanzees moving through the forest canopy.
Once a chimpanzee group is located, visitors are permitted to spend up to one hour observing them at close range. During this time, trekkers can watch the chimpanzees as they feed, groom one another, play, and interact socially within their groups. This close and natural encounter offers both excitement and valuable insight into the complex social lives of these intelligent animals, making the experience highly rewarding.
Kibale Forest National Park is widely considered the best location for chimpanzee trekking in East Africa, largely due to its consistently high success rate, which often exceeds 90 percent. Trekking times can vary depending on the movement and location of the chimpanzees on a given day, but the activity is generally suitable for visitors with a moderate level of fitness.
